The devastating flood that ravaged parts of Igarra, headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government, has left communities in grief and families displaced. Homes, farmlands, and livelihoods have been swept away, and the pain is felt across Akoko-Edo.
“I extend my heartfelt sympathy to all victims, families, and residents affected by this disaster. My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost loved ones, properties, and sources of income. No community should go through this level of destruction.
I strongly advise residents living in flood-prone and riverbank areas of Igarra and other parts of Akoko-Edo to vacate immediately to safer ground. Your lives are more important than any property. Please cooperate with community leaders, NEMA, and the State Emergency Management Agency to relocate temporarily while they work on lasting solutions. Let us avoid further loss of lives.
I call on Edo State Government to activate emergency relief for displaced families; food, medical care, shelter, and rebuilding support, while urging NEMA and Federal Ministry of Environment to conduct an immediate assessment and provide palliatives to victims, and
relevant authorities to urgently desilt drainages, construct flood control channels, and implement erosion control measures in Igarra and other vulnerable communities in Akoko-Edo.
This disaster is a reminder that climate adaptation and infrastructure planning can no longer be delayed.
To the people of Igarra: you are not alone. We will rise from this together. Akoko-Edo, we rise together, we prosper together.
