Owo Blow, Arowolo… 10 memorable movies of ‘Ogogo’

Taiwo Hassan, the veteran Nigerian actor popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after a battle with cancer.

Ogogo’s death comes barely a week after his daughters announced that he was battling stage-four cancer. The family said doctors discovered the condition about three weeks before the announcement, and it had affected the actor’s abdomen.

His daughters also revealed that some medical institutions had said they could no longer administer chemotherapy to him.

They subsequently appealed to the public to recommend other treatment options for their father while Nollywood actors rallied support for the veteran actor.

Ogogo began his acting career in 1981 while working as an auto-mechanic at the Lagos State Water Corporation but eventually became a full-time actor in 1994.

He rose to prominence after featuring in ‘Owo Blow’, the 1996 home-video trilogy directed by Tade Ogidan.

Ogogo was known for playing authoritative and sometimes intimidating characters, particularly in traditional Yoruba dramas.

He featured in hundreds of films and was also known for popularising several slang expressions.

One of his popular expressions was: “Gbogbo wa la ma je breakfast. Asiko t’onikaluku ma je ti e, ototo ni,” meaning, “Everyone will go through heartbreak; the timing for each person will only be different.” The epigram inspired Burna Boy’s monster hit ‘Last Last’.

At 66, Ogogo remained one of the actors who helped shape and popularise Yoruba-language cinema in Nigeria.

Below are some of Ogogo’s memorable movies:

‘Abule Sowo’

‘Aso Idoti’
