The Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting the rights of the girl child and ending child marriage, commending Governor Monday Okpebholo for his commitment to the welfare, safety, and development of children across the state.
In a statement marking the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, celebrated annually on October 11, with the theme “End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights,” the Commissioner noted that protecting girls from early marriage, abuse, exploitation, and other harmful practices is essential to building a safer and more prosperous Edo State.
Hon. Abdallah commended Governor Okpebholo for providing the leadership and support needed to advance child protection and promote the rights and wellbeing of children. She also highlighted the various programmes, sensitisation campaigns, and advocacy initiatives undertaken to promote awareness and implementation of the Child Rights Law in the state.
She emphasised that child marriage robs girls of their childhood, education, health, and opportunities to fulfil their potential, stressing that every girl deserves access to education, protection, and the freedom to pursue her aspirations.
The Commissioner called on parents, traditional and religious leaders, community stakeholders, civil society organisations, and other relevant institutions to support efforts to end child marriage and strengthen the protection of girls’ rights.
She assured residents that the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development would sustain its advocacy and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure that every girl child in Edo State grows up in a safe, supportive, and empowering environment.
“Investing in the girl child is investing in the future of Edo State. We must work collectively to end child marriage, uphold the Child Rights Law, and ensure that every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow, and realise her full potential,” the Commissioner stated.
